New Brunswick, NJ — David France, author of "Our Fathers: The Secret Life of the Catholic Church in the Age of Scandal (Broadway Books, 2005)," will present "The People and the Church: Five Years Later" at the Rutgers Student Center, 126 College Ave., Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Tuesday, March 20 at 8 p.m.

The free public program, an in-depth look at the fallout from the pedophilia scandal that rocked the Church in 2002, will be held in the Multipurpose Room. It will include a reception and book signing following the lecture.

A team of Boston Globe reporters broke news of the pedophilia scandal and the alleged involvement of priests in Greater Boston, and eventually other parts of the country, in early 2002. It was estimated that perhaps 100,000 children had been molested by clergymen.

At the time, France was the senior investigative editor at Newsweek and covered the crisis. His book, based on hundreds of interviews, private correspondence, unpublished scientific probes, secret Vatican documents and tens of thousands of pages of court records, traces the scandal's roots. He takes readers back to the Catholic Church of the 1950s, a time of relative innocence, to search for answers.
