A former employee of the Catholic Diocese of Austin has been charged with theft, after an audit revealed he had embezzled as much as $60,000.

Four and a half years ago, the diocese put Leopoldo Anchondo Cerros in charge of the Office of Immigrant Concerns (OIC).

The purpose was to assist recent immigrants in their pursuit of legal documents, citizenship and other things for a standard fee of about $25.

Investigators say it was Cerros' job to manage the money and turn it over to the diocese business manager, but an internal audit revealed Cerros pocketed most of the money.

Catholic charities released this statement, "While we are assured that those who paid this money received the services they should have, we are very concerned that the money is missing. It is important that it be returned, so that we can provide further services to the needy in our communities."

Police say Cerros is aware of the charges against him and they're waiting for him to turn himself in.
