Austin Police Department detectives said they know who embezzled $60,000 from the needy within the Catholic Diocese of Austin.

Leo Anchondo was in charge of the diocese's Office of Immigrant Concerns from 2001 to 2005. It helped immigrants with paperwork and legal issues for about $25.

Over the years KXAN interviewed Anchondo about immigrant affairs, such as how often they were robbed of their money.

Detectives said Anchondo took money from immigrants himself and allegedly deposited it into his personal account.

Anchondo is charged with theft and has not been arrested.

He left the diocese in March 2005.
