Former Priest on Trial in Abuse Case

The Courier-Journal [Louisville KY]
March 19, 2007

The retrial of former Roman Catholic priest Bruce Ewing on rape and sodomy charges will begin with jury selection this afternoon in Jefferson Circuit Court.

A previous trial, in September 2004, ended in a mistrial when one juror refused to convict Ewing.

Ewing, who left the priesthood in 1977 and was later an aide to two Louisville government officials, has been out of jail on bond.

He is accused of abusing Janet Goodner between 1974 and 1976 while he was a priest at St. Vincent de Paul Church.

During the trial, Goodner testified she had a consensual relationship in the mid-1970s -- starting when she was 14.

Ewing denied any sexual relationship with Goodner.

If convicted of third-degree rape and two counts of third-degree sodomy, Ewing could be sentenced to as many as 15 years in prison.
