Helmetta — A borough resident and former Catholic priest was arrested this afternoon on charges he sexually assaulted a young girl from the time she was 3 until was age 7, authorities said.

Ronald Becker, 62, a former priest with the Diocese of Trenton, was picked up on Wednesday at his Raintree Court residence by members of the Jamesburg Police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit.

Becker is charged with sexual assault as a result of an investigation which began on Feb. 23 involving a female family member who reported that Becker fondled her on multiple occasions from the ages of 3 to 7, according to a release issued by the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

Many of these incidents occurred in a family residence in Jamesburg, the report said.

The victim is now 26 years old and resides with her family in Florida.

Becker was ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest in 1973 with his last assignment to the Diocese of Trenton. In 2002, his faculties were removed by the Diocese, which prohibited him from functioning as a priest. But neither the victim nor her immediate family were parishioners of a church Becker was assigned to during his tenure, authorities said.

A message left with a Diocese spokeswoman has not been returned.

Bail has not yet been set on these charges and Becker is currently being housed at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center.

Authorities are asking that anyone with information regarding this investigation, or incidents similar in nature contact Investigator Daniel Ruschak of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit at (732) 745-3600, or Detective Louis Hornberger of the Jamesburg Police Department at (732) 521-0011 anytime day or night.
