Jefferson County — A former Catholic priest has been convicted of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

The conviction is the second for Timothy Evans in the last month.

A jury in Jefferson County convicted Evans Monday for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy brought to Evans for counseling by his parents in 1996.

The jury heard evidence of three similar incidents with other young men: two teens and a youth pastor at the parish in Arvada where Evans was assigned.

Last month in Fort Collins, Evans was convicted of assaulting a young parishioner. The jury found a pattern of abuse.

Evans faces 10 years to life in the Fort Collins case. He will be sentenced May 31 in the Jefferson County case. He faces two to eight years.

Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput released a statement on the conviction.

"As these judicial proceedings conclude, I offer my prayers that a process of healing might begin. For those who have been hurt by Timothy Evans, I express my deep sorrow and pray for your healing and peace. I also pray for the families and church communities that have been affected by these sad events. I also pray for Timothy Evans and his family," said Chaput in the statement.

Chaput also said Evans was removed from the priesthood after the first allegation against Evans surfaced in 2003.

"These actions reflect long-standing Archdiocesan policies. The Archdiocese of Denver does not permit any priest to minister with a credible claim of sexual abuse of a minor against him. We remain committed to these policies," said Chaput in the statement.
