Golden — A Jefferson County jury has found former priest Timothy Evans guilty of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

After deliberating since late Thursday, the jury reached the verdict this morning. Evans bowed his hand as he was handcuffed, smiling and nodding at his family and friends as he was taken to the Jefferson County Jail.

He will be sentenced May 31.

Timothy Evans was convicted in a second sexual assualt in Jefferson County on April 9, 2007.

"This is an important one," said prosecutor Zak Phillips. "People are a lot of safer."

Evans, 44, of Loveland, was indicted last August of groping a devout family's teenage son a decade ago during counseling.

The assault allegedly occurred between May 1995 and May 1997, when the son was about 16 years old and Evans was an assistant pastor at Spirit of Christ Catholic Community in Arvada.

In March, a Larimer County jury convicted Evans on three counts of sexual assault of a child by a person in a position of trust for groping a 17-year-old boy in 1999. He could face 10 years in prison in that case.
