Des Moines, Iowa — Bishop Joseph Charron announced Tuesday that he is retiring due to health reasons.

He has been bishop of the Des Moines Catholic Diocese for 13 years.

Charron faced some difficult issues during his tenure, include dealing with one of the biggest controversies in the Catholic Church of priests accused of sexual abuse.

Bishop Charron's Legacy

The diocese said the bishop's other accomplishments include a focus on the formation of adult's Catholic faith and a capital campaign that raised more than $20 million to provide for priest retirement and medical care.

Charron was installed as bishop of the Des Moines Catholic Diocese in January 1994.

"I feel a real peace. I know I've made the right decision," he said.

"He's been a wonderful bishop. I'm sure it's the right decision, a prayerful decision. I wish him the best," said diocesan member Delores Dunagan.

During his time as bishop, he created a special committee that reviewed the diocesan sexual abuse policy.

In the midst of nationwide controversy over pedophile priests, Charron said he wanted to strengthen the diocese's policy to make it more centered on the victim and to protect children.

The committee remains in place to handle future allegations.

Charron said he's always had a good relationship with young people in the diocese. It's one that he plans to continue.

"I consider it a gift; the response from young people and I'll be there in whatever way I can," he said.
