Key players in the months-long mediation among the Archdiocese of Portland, parishioners and priest accusers finally spoke out today about a $75 million settlement that will bring the archdiocese out of bankruptcy.

The settlement, signed this afternoon by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Elizabeth L. Perris, will provide financial relief for about 175 people who say they were sexually abused by priests. The church agreed to release documents linked to the case, and priests will read a letter to parishioners Sunday.

Archbishop John G. Vlazny expressed relief that the process that began in 2004 when the church sought bankruptcy protection is now finally over.

Bill Crane, Oregon director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is pushing for a memorial for victims of priest sex abuse.

Matt Clemens, a member of the committee that represented sex-abuse claimants in the bankruptcy, is pleased the process is over but is wary of reconciliation.
