Omagh-born priest had sex with murder victim

AN Omagh-born priest has admitted to having sex with a Polish student before she was murdered and buried under the floorboards of his church in Glasgow.

Father Gerry Nugent, 63, was been giving evidence at the High Court in Edinburgh at the murder trial of Peter Tobin last week.

The victim, Angelika Kluk, had been living rent-free at St. Patrick's Church House, in Anderson, Glasgow. The court heard that Fr Gerry gave her a lap-top computer, paid for her to go on trips and even allowed her to use his credit card. He also said he had paid for her to fly to Poland.

When asked by counsel for the defendant, how many other people in his parish he had helped by giving them money, a computer, and his credit card, Fr Nugent said that he had never given anyone else his credit card but said he had helped lots of people in various ways, adding, "I would give someone my last penny."

Earlier, the trial heard that Fr Nugent flew into a rage when he heard that Angelika was having an affair with a married man. Under cross-examination, the priest conceded that he had abused a position of trust by having sex with Angelika on a number of occasions. He said that he had had an alcohol problem in the past.

Church odd-job man, Peter Tobin, 60, denies raping and murdering the 23-year-old Polish student between September 24 and 29, and hiding her body under the floor of the church. The court heard that Tobin had worked as a handyman at the church last summer under the name of Pat McLaughlin

In 1994, he was jailed for horrific sex attacks on two 14-year-old girls. Tobin raped one of the children and also subjected her to a horrific sexual assault. He was given 14-year concurrent jail terms for each attack. Both girls were unconscious at the time of the attacks.

On September 24 Angelika had spent much of the day helping him (Tobin) paint a shed which adjoins the chapel house.

Fr Nugent said that about 3.30pm that day, he went upstairs to get changed and on his way to his room he saw Angelika standing by the garage door using her mobile phone and said that when he left the church he didn't know if anyone else was in the church.

The court had heard that when questioned by police, Tobin said that someone in a nice car had come to collect Angelika to take her to play golf. Tobin is alleged to have struck Angelika on the head with a blunt instrument before stabbing her several times.

Fr Nugent, who left Omagh some years ago, told the court he had quit his position as parish priest within the past two weeks at the behest of Archbishop Mario Conti. The trial of Tobin continues.
