As a Franciscan Brother, Adley Lobo was expected to adhere to a strict set of monastic vows. But police allege he strayed not only from the high standards set by the Catholic Church, but from the laws of the land as well.

On Monday, officers arrested Lobo, 24, and charged him with two counts of possession of child porn and one count each of making child porn, and making child porn available to others.

The arrest of Brother Lobo took place after police executed a search warrant at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, at 2210 Lawrence Avenue East.

"This started with undercover officers. It is alleged that they found out that this Brother was downloading child porn off the internet," said Constable Victor Kwong, Communications officer, Toronto Police.

After executing the search warrant police found some computer equipment which they seized and is now part of their investigation. They're now trying to determine if any of the alleged activity was actually going on inside the church.

According to Neil MacCarthy, Communications Director, Archdiocese of Toronto, Lobo w as not an ordained priest, but was studying to become one.

"We have very strong procedures and policies at the archdiocese in Toronto," he adds. "We feel confident with them and it's always time to look at them and say how can we do better."

Lobo has been affiliated with both St. Francis Friary in

Caledon and St. Lawrence Martyr Church in Toronto.

He made his first court appearance on Monday.
