San Jose — A New York attorney has been charged in federal court in San Jose with possessing child pornography on a computer while he served as a visiting professor at the Santa Clara University School of Law, court records show.

Murdaugh Stuart Madden Jr., 58, a former professor at Pace Law School in White Plains, N.Y., was charged today with one count of possessing child pornography. Madden was named in a document known as an information, which typically signifies that a defendant intends to plead guilty.

Reached by phone today, Madden hung up on a Chronicle reporter.

But one of his attorneys, Tony Boskovich, said "Professor Madden has had a long and distinguished career as a lawyer and law professor. We have received the charges and are reviewing them."

According to court records, federal prosecutors are seeking forfeiture of a Dell laptop computer issued to Madden by Pace Law School as well as a Dell desktop computer made available to him for his use by Santa Clara University School of Law, where he served a term as a visiting professor.

The charges resulted after an investigation by Santa Clara police and the FBI.

Madden is scheduled to be arraigned May 10 before U.S. Magistrate Howard Lloyd in San Jose.

In a statement today, Stephen Friedman, dean of Pace Law School, said Madden retired from the school on Feb. 28.

"I cannot comment on the specific charges of the legal case," Friedman said. "We at Pace Law School are saddened by the development involving Professor Madden. This is a personal crisis for him and his family."
