An Episcopalian priest who broke with the national church over its views on homosexuality and faith resigned as head of a Newport Beach parish after admitting he engaged in "inappropriate conduct" with a woman parishioner.

The Rev. Praveen Bunyan stepped down as head rector of St. James Anglican Church last week, church officials said.

The married priest acknowledged "inappropriate conduct" with the woman, church spokeswoman Karen Bro said.

The parishioner had complained to a member of the church governing board around Easter, the Rev. Canon David C. Anderson said.

"She said she didn't appreciate the attention he was giving her and said it was wrong. It wasn't sexual, but it clearly crossed the boundary," Anderson said. "He confessed and asked for forgiveness."

"He was taken by her, but thank goodness it didn't go any further than that," Anderson said.

Bunyan became head rector of the 1,200-member parish in 2003.

In 2004, his parish and two others in Southern California voted to disassociate from the Episcopalian Church USA over the ordination of gays and later allied themselves with an Anglican diocese in Uganda.

At the time, Bunyan said he felt the national church had "completely moved away from core church values."
