Spokane Valley -- A Spokane Valley Catholic church held a meeting Monday night to discuss contributions toward the Spokane Diocese priest sex abuse settlement.

St. Mary's holds private meeting

Local catholics are being asked to come up with $10 million toward the settlement. St. Mary's Catholic Church must provide $611,000 of that total amount. St. Mary's parishoners were recently sent a letter, asking for each family to donate $1,000.

Parishoners were told at the private meeting that they have about 6 months to raise the money. In last week's letter, parishoners were told they can pay with credit cards, and even earn airline miles after making a contribution.

"Six-hundred and eleven thousand dollars in addition to the normal support is a lot of money," says one St. Mary's parishoner. "It's going to hurt, and be painful for those parish members." That same parishoner told KREM 2 News he looks at the $1,000 not as a penalty, but as an opportunity to pay for the church's debt.
