A Victorian Catholic priest is facing charges of raping a child over allegations dating back more than 30 years.

Retired priest Father Adelrick D'Cruz, 77, is charged with three counts of rape and 10 counts of unlawful and indecent assault of a girl, who was eight when the first offence allegedly happened.

He was scheduled to appear at the Shepparton Magistrates Court on Tuesday for a filing hearing.

However, D'Cruz's solicitor told the court his client could not attend court on medical grounds.

Police said D'Cruz has worked in parishes in Victorian towns including Bendigo, Benalla, Yarrawonga and Cohuna.

His alleged victim came forward early last year and made a statement to police.

It is alleged the offences occurred between 1969 and 1979 and involve one victim, police said.

D'Cruz, who now lives in Clayton South in Melbourne, was charged in April this year.

He is on bail with the case due to return to the Shepparton Magistrates Court for a committal mention on June 19.
