Burlington, Vt. — Vermont's Roman Catholic bishop is defending a staff member after an advocacy group for victims of priest abuse called for the employee's dismissal.

Former Burlington Police Chief Kevin Scully is responsible for training church employees about how to prevent child sexual abuse.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, known as SNAP, has criticized the church for not training all of its workers, including volunteers.

The Vermont diocese is one of only two states that has not completed the training mandated by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Bishop Salvatore Matano said Scully is doing a good job and has accomplished a lot in the last 18 months as director of the diocese's safe environment program.
