Los Angeles (AP) - A judge has ruled that four people can seek punitive damages against the LA Archdiocese for allegedly failing to protect them from a priest they accused of sexual abuse.

In his ruling, LA County Superior Court Judge Haley Fromholz cited Cardinal Roger Mahony's alleged misrepresentation of a videotape found in the bedroom of a priest accused of molesting children.

Mahony reportedly wrote to Vatican officials that Father Lynn Caffoe had videotaped "partially naked' boys in a state of sexual arousal.

But he told parishioners that the boys were "fully clothed" and that there was no sexual activity.

The ruling could increase pressure on the archdiocese to reach a settlement with its accusers.

More than 500 people have alleged that they were abused by priests in the archdiocese. Many also have alleged that the church knew about the danger but failed to act.
