Rome - A controversial BBC documentary on sexual abuse and the Vatican will be broadcast by the Italian state television network RAI on May 31, broadcast executives have announced.

The BBC program, which attempts to demonstrate that a 1961 Vatican document sought to cover up evidence of clerical misconduct, has drawn intense criticism from Church leaders and sympathetic lawmakers in Italy. RAI's director general, Claudio Cappon, announced on May 23 that that program would be aired in conjunction with a rebuttal, giving Church leaders an opportunity to correct distortions.
