A former Baptist church minister was sentenced to three and a half years in jail today for sexually abusing six girls aged between nine and 13 over a two-year period.

Nigel Westley, 44, of Plaistow, east London, pleaded guilty last month at Snaresbrook crown court to nine counts of sexual abuse between January 2002 and May 2004.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing 108 indecent photos of children. The activities came to light when one of his victims told her family about her assault and church leaders then contacted police.

As well as his jail sentence Westley is required to sign the sexual offenders register and has been banned from working with children.

The court heard how Westley said he was "haunted by the demons inside him that led him to commit these offences".

Investigating officer detective constable Harry Walsh-Jones, from the Child Abuse Investigation Command, said: "It's a shame that Westley didn't seek help for these demons to save the victims the horrific trauma of these assaults."

Westley worked in the Walsall and Wolverhampton areas before moving to Newham.

"We believe there may be other victims out there and would like urge anyone who has information about Westley to contact us in confidence as soon as possible," DC Walsh-Jones added.
