The Anglican Church's Adelaide diocese has paid out $3.9 million in compensation to victims of sexual abuse.

Yesterday's meeting of the church's governing council, the Synod, learned that 40 victims have had their claims settled while a similar number are still being being assessed.

Anglican Archbishop of Adelaide Jeffrey Driver says the grim financial position is a result of the church taking responsibility.

"It's also therefore part of the healing I hope for them and certainly, I hope, for the diocese as well," he said.

"The diocese is prepared to take that responsibility and it has been reflected in our financial accounts this year."

The diocese is also supportive of a national proposal for a tightening of background checks and reviews of bishops.
