A Children's charity have banned the shamed priest in the Angelika Kluk murder trial from doing his community service in their shops.

Social workers hoped Father Gerry Nugent, who claims he had a sexual relationship with Polish student Angelika, could serve his sentence in a Barnardo's shop in Glasgow.

But Susan Dodds, manager of the charity's Queen's Park branch, refused to allow him to work there.

She said: "We have had people on community service orders in the past but when I heard who it was, I consulted with my staff then turned down the request.

"We have children in this shop at most times of the day. Given the background to this case I decided it was the best move."

Nugent, 62, a self-confessed alcoholic, was parish priest at St Patrick's Church in Anderston, Glasgow, where tragic Angelika, 23, was raped and murdered by handyman Peter Tobin, 60. The priest gave evidence at Tobin's trial but was convicted of contempt of court for repeatedly failing to give straight answers and given 100 hours community service.

Serial sex offender Tobin, 60, was jailed for life and ordered to serve at least 21 years.

First-time offenders such as Nugent are often put to work in charity shops for their community service. But if social workers can't find an organisation willing to take him on, he could go back to court and be resentenced.

Former Justice of the Peace James Cannell, who served at Glasgow District Court for 25 years, said: "There are a number of options open to the court.

"They could admonish him but it is possible they could send him to prison."

During Tobin's trial, Father Nugent faced allegations from defence QC Donald Findlay that he knew more about Angelika's death than he was saying.

The priest has admitted he regularly visited hookers for sex and had been questioned by the police over two prostitute murders.

Days before the trial, Father Nugent resigned his post at St Patrick's Church.

He has now been forced to retire by church bosses.
