Columbus — A federal judge sentenced a former Newark minister to 10 years in prison on child pornography charges Wednesday.

David Waser, 58, a former minister at Newark's Second Church of Christ, remains in federal custody after being sentenced by Judge George C. Smith in U.S. District Court. He faced a maximum sentence of 20 years for buying 11 videotapes featuring sexual scenes with children.

Waser pleaded guilty in March to receiving child pornography. Smith also ordered him to undergo sexual addiction treatment.

As part of a plea agreement, Waser pleaded guilty to one of his two felony charges and agreed to forfeit 11 videotapes and his computer. The judge dismissed the second count Wednesday.

Federal child pornography charges against Waser's wife, Judy Waser, were also dismissed in March.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Deborah Solove previously declined to comment on why a felony count of attempted possession of child pornography was dropped.

The couple was arrested last summer after David Waser's purchase of 11 videotapes that featured scenes of children, some as young as 4, involved in various sex acts with other children and adults. The videos were discovered by an undercover postal worker.

Judy Waser reportedly knew about only one of these videos.

In a written admission disclosed in U.S. District Court in August, David Waser admitted to exposing himself and touching young girls during the past 37 years.

David Waser became the minister at the Second Church of Christ in 2001. He was the pastor there at the time of his arrest.

Upon his release, Waser will be supervised for five years and have to register as a sexually oriented offender.
