Zagreb - A Croatian priest was detained by police under suspicion that he had sexually molested several boys from his parish, the Vecernji List daily said Thursday. The 63-year-old priest, identified only by initials, allegedly abused five boys aged between 10 and 12 years, during preparations for their first communion on the Adriatic island of Rab.

Prosecutors would decide Thursday on possible charges against the priest, the report said.

Danijel Delonga of the Rijeka diocese said that the church would "take adequate steps" against the priest if he turns out guilty of molesting the boys. "Such an act is the most shameful betrayal of our vows," he said.

Catholicism is the dominant religion in Croatia, ahead of the Orthodox Christian and Muslim religion mostly practised by minorities.
