Washington, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) The largest Catholic archdiocese in the United States will face a marathon legal process over the next six months, when the Los Angeles Superior Court will hear 15 cases involving 172 alleged victims of sexual abuse.

These cases, out of 500 people who are suing church members for sexual abuse will begin July 9, and includes calling Cardinal Roger Mahony as a witness in one of the trials, La Opinion daily reported Monday.

The Church stands to lose a great deal of money and prestige, and clergy have been trying to collect funds, selling 50 buildings and other properties to hush-up the offenses committed by some of its former members.

In December, the archdiocese paid $60 million to 45 victims of cases from 1950 to 1987, while several religious orders paid millions to silence demands by sexual-abuse victims.
