A Catholic priest has appeared in court accused of indecently assaulting nine girls and a boy aged under 14.

Fr Edmund Cotter, 60, who is currently suspended from his post at Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria, appeared at Preston Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The offences allegedly happened during his ministry at St Gregory's Church in Blackpool Road, Preston, in the 1970s.

Cotter, wearing a green raincoat, and looking flushed, spoke only to confirm his name and address and didn't indicate a plea.

He was flanked by two parishioners who watched the proceedings from the public gallery along with three other members of public.

Deputy District Judge Jane Goodwin adjourned the case to be sent to Preston Crown Court on July 20.

Cotter was bailed.
