An Aboriginal elder who swapped petrol for sex with teenage girls has left his community grieving, and his victims ashamed and frightened.

TThe Yalata community was torn apart when it learned preacher Winkie Ingomar had been abusing teenage girls, the Supreme Court in Port Augusta heard.

"We felt angry and sadness and all we wanted to do was burn his home," a community statement read to the court said.

"The community was in shock and it tore our community apart."

Ingomar, 52, an initiated traditional Aboriginal man, appeared in court yesterday for sentencing proceedings after pleading guilty this week to five charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with three girls, aged 13 and 14, between January and June last year.

The court heard Ingomar swapped petrol for sex with the girls, knowing they would use the petrol to sniff.

Yesterday he sat in the dock doubled over, hiding his face as the victim impact statements were read aloud.

The girls said they were frightened of Ingomar.

One said that when she looked at Ingomar "I see him like a devil sitting there" and that what happened was "like watching a horror movie".

Another girl said she felt "shame about going back to the community". Another said she hoped "people will . . . welcome us into the community again".

Outside court, Yalata pastor Keith Peters said he was "proud" of the girls and the community for reporting the abuse.

A father of one of the girls said he thought Ingomar would be feeling shame and guilt.

Ingomar was remanded in custody for further sentencing proceedings this month.
