Los Angeles (AP) - An attorney is confirming a settlement in a church sex abuse case -- one that reportedly involves the biggest payout from among those cases.

The main plaintiff's attorney says the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles reached a settlement Saturday with more than 500 people who say they were sexually abused by clergy. A joint statement is supposed to be released in the morning -- with a news conference set for Monday.

According to a source, the deal calls for the church to pay $660 million. It's by far the biggest payout in the sexual abuse scandal, and represents more than $1.3 million per plaintiff.

One plaintiff who'd been expected to testify in the first trial, which had been set to begin, says he's disappointed he won't get to take on the church in court, but that he's glad the victims will be compensated.

The settlements would push the total amount paid out by the US church to more than two billion dollars -- with about a quarter of that money coming from the Los Angeles archdiocese.
