Los Angeles (AP) -- The national director of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests says the settlement does not end the suffering for clergy abuse victims.

But David Clohessy, who was in Los Angeles for the settlement of abuse lawsuits against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, did say the suit which led to the settlement did result in the identification and removal of "predator priests" and the protection of children in the future.

Clohessy says the apology by Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony is not enough and that he must show by future actions that he has the interests of victims and potential victims at heart.

He said steps Mahony had taken in the past delayed healing and put children at risk.

Other reaction: Vivian Viscarra who attends Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels said the victims deserve the payout even though it could hurt the church's ability to deliver important services. And she said the whole matter is making her re-evaluate her views of whether people in the ministry should be married. She said, "People do have needs."

And Chris Parra, who attends Mass every Sunday, says she's upset that her tithing would go toward paying the settlement. She says "there's still a lot of healing to be done."
