Los Angeles CA — "There really is no way to go back and give them that innocence that was taken from them," Cardinal Roger Mahony said after Mass Sunday. "The one thing I wish I could give the victims ... I cannot. Once again, I apologize to anyone who has been offended, who has been abused. It should not have happened and it will not happen again." He added, "I made mistakes. I wish I had known when we sent priests to treatment programs, they (those programs) didn't work." Replied David Clohessy, national director for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests: "It's hard to take his apology seriously....He avoided the No. 1 thing he fears, which is disclosing under oath how much he knew and how little he did about predatory priests."
