The head of the Roman Catholic Church archdiocese in Bulawayo, Archbishop Pius Ncube, is allegedly having a sexual relationship with a member of his congregation and is now being sued by the woman's husband for damages, it emerged yesterday.

Roman Catholic Church priests are sworn to a vow of celibacy, meaning that they must never marry and must never engage in sexual intercourse.

The woman's husband, Mr Onesimus Sibanda, is demanding $20 billion from Archbishop Ncube (60) for allegedly having an adulterous affair with his wife, Mrs Rosemary Sibanda (44).

The couple stays at Iminyela Flats in Mpopoma suburb.

This came to light yesterday morning at the High Court in Bulawayo when Mr Sibanda, a Radio Communications Technician attached to the National Railways of Zimbabwe, filed a lawsuit against Archbishop Ncube.

Mrs Sibanda is the secretary of St Anne's Association of St Pius Church in Njube.

Mr Sibanda is married to his wife under a monogamous marriage (Marriage Act Chapter 5:11), which was legally registered on 8 June 1988 with the magistrates' court and it still subsists.

The court summons were served on Archbishop Ncube at St Mary's Cathedral, the diocese headquarters, by the Assistant Sheriff, Mr Thomas Ndebele.

Archbishop Ncube must respond to the lawsuit within 10 days.

Mr Sibanda is being represented by Mr Munyaradzi Nzarayapenga of Messrs DubeBanda, Nzarayapenga and Partners.

"On diverse occasions between the period beginning January 2006 and in places particularly in the environs of Bulawayo and St Mary's Cathedral the defendant illicitly associated with Plaintiff's wife, one Rosemary Sibanda, in an adulterous sexual relationship well knowing of the marital status of the Plaintiff's wife.

"Owing to the illicit and adulterous association the Plaintiff suffered damages as follows: $10 billion being adultery as the Defendant has abused his trust and position and engaged in an adulterous relationship with Plaintiff's wife despite full knowledge that she was married. The marriage was solemnised in the Roman Catholic Church. $5 billion being loss of consortium and $5 billion being loss of contumelia," reads the summons.

Mr Sibanda argues that Archbishop Ncube has caused him a lot of suffering and humiliation.

"As a direct result of the Defendant's illicit and adulterous association with the Plaintiff's wife the Plaintiff has lost the love, comfort and society that he previously enjoyed with his wife. Plaintiff has been seriously humiliated, his dignity has been impaired, his religious inclinations and faith shaken and he has suffered loss of consortium as he has had serious problems with his wife since January 2006," read the summons.

Mr Sibanda further prays for the, "Costs of suit on an attorney and client scale as the actions of the Defendant have seriously injured the dignity, reputation and well being of the Plaintiff's and his family."
