(CBS 11 News) DALLAS Disturbing allegations are being leveled against a teacher at a private school in Dallas. Police are investigating an alleged sexual relationship between a student and a teacher at the Ursuline Academy.

Administrators, at the catholic college prep school for 9th-12th grade girls, say the allegations are very upsetting.

Dallas police say the male teacher began having a sexual relationship with the 17-year-old student in February. The teacher allegedly had sexual contact with the teen numerous times, until last month when the allegations were brought to administrators.

School leaders sent home a letter to parents and graduates that said in part – "…we are heartbroken as we bring this message to you. At Ursuline Academy, the wellbeing of our students is at the very core of our mission and always is our first concern. Please know that we are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of our students. We do not, and will not, tolerate any actions that compromise the welfare of our students."

School officials say the teacher has been fired.

"It was utterly shocking to us to hear news like this," says Sister Margaret Ann Moser, Ursuline Academy President. "Because this is a special place and we care for our young people."

Dallas police say no other students have come forward and they are investigating the case.

While the teacher has not been arrested police say he does face sexual assault charges.

Under state law, it's inappropriate for teachers to have sexual relationships with their students.

Ursuline Academy administrators say the school continuously conducts background checks on its staff and will now review school policies to try and make sure an incident like this one doesn't happen again.
