California — No, Cardinal Roger Mahony should not resign. The cardinal was not bishop/cardinal when most of the abuses occurred. For those which happened under his term, he was guided by the "expert" psychiatrists who advised him that the perpetrators were cured after treatment. Many (or most) of these priests have died.

- DOLORES HICKS, Manhattan Beach

He should resign, and the names of those priests involved should be listed publicly.

- MARY THOMAS, Los Angeles

Cardinal Mahony should follow Cardinal (Bernard) Law's example. He should resign and flee to Rome. He will not assist the D.A. in prosecuting the pedophile priests. Many parishes will probably see their donations drop off.

- BILL CORRIGAN, Los Angeles

Yes, absolutely, Cardinal Mahony should resign and leave L.A. We are abhorred with this scandal and the large settlement, and we are both practicing Catholics.

- ROBERT HOERSCH and LUCY ARTINIAN

Manhattan Beach

… Mahony … should be arrested for aiding and abetting a known criminal act and a known criminal when he knew that certain priests were committing these acts on children and he did nothing but transfer them from one parish to another. … (An) untold (number of) … children were abused because of his actions.

- TOM BALL, Culver City

The obvious answer is "Yes." In fact, he should have resigned the moment he decided to start protecting the pedophile priests. He's a disgrace to the cloth.

- NOEL HOUSER, Inglewood

I definitely believe that Mahony should retire, resign or whatever. He should also maybe just leave the face of the earth. He did something horrible, hurt a lot of families and he should go into politics instead of the priesthood.

- CAROLYN M. DOW, Lomita

… Mahony should resign. My reasons are for his role in transferring all of those priests who molested innocent children to other parishes and then refusing to hand over their records to the law enforcement, dragging this out longer. … He is showing more empathy and concern for illegal aliens who are breaking the law than he did for the molested children of his church. His values are extremely poor. Consequently, he does not belong in a leadership role in any church.
