Australia — The High Court has granted a former Anglican priest permission to appeal against his conviction for indecent assault, due to a legal technicality.

A former priest will be allowed a High Court appeal over an assault conviction.

Queenslander Raymond Frederick Ayles had been sentenced to a two-year non-parole term for assaulting the boy more than 30 years ago, when he was a young priest in northern Adelaide.

The 62-year-old former priest had pleaded not guilty to the charge and gave evidence at his trial.

An Adelaide judge later changed the details of the charge and found him guilty.

The appeal will be heard before the High Court.
