Auckland 6am: The Catholic Church in New Zealand is this morning dismissing claims that some Roman Catholic priests who've sexually abused children are being moved to the Pacific.

The claims come from an Australian psychologist and former nun, Michelle Mulvihill.

Mulvihill claims the Pacific is being used as a dumping ground for paedophile priests and brothers.

She says Pacific islands like Papua New Guinea, in particular, are good hiding places for offending priests.

But Lyndsay Freer, the spokesperson for the Catholic Church of New Zealand, says the claims are outrageous. (listen)

Three years ago, 62-year-old Catholic priest, Frank Klep, who was sheltered in Samoa by the Salesian Order while he was on the run from police, was deported.

He later pleaded guilty in Melbourne County Court to 13 charges of indecent assault against teenage boys in Victoria during the 1970s.
