South Dakota — A deceased Roman Catholic priest from Philip is accused in a civil suit of sexually abusing a female parishioner in 1987.

The allegation against Father Christopher Scadron comes five years after his death and one year after the accuser said she remembered the attack.

Pam Baye, 43, and her husband Sylvan filed a civil suit Thursday in federal court against the Catholic Diocese of Rapid City.

Scadron was the family priest for Baye, blessed her marriage and baptized her children, the complaint states. Baye said that in 1987, four years after her marriage, she sought counseling from Scadron regarding her history as a victim of family sex abuse.

While in therapy in 2006, she recovered a memory of being assaulted by Scadron during counseling at Sacred Heart Church in Philip. The priest told her she was going to hell and that her children would die and go to hell if she told anyone, the complaint states.

Baye, who now lives in eastern Iowa, wants the diocese to pay her for its failure to punish Scadron and prevent him from committing sexual abuse.
