South Dakota — Several people have accused a Lutheran pastor of sexually abusing them as children in the 1970s and 1980s, according to a letter from Bishop Andrea DeGroot-Nesdahl.

The Rev. Floyd Bacon retired from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in the mid-1980s, and died in 1997, she wrote in the letter. His service at South Dakota churches included Corsica, Lake Andes, Pickstown, Wagner and Hurley, according to Argus Leader archives, and he worked in Iowa and Minnesota as well.

The bishop disclosed the reported assaults to members of involved churches last week in a letter. She invited them to a meeting Thursday night at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Menno.

"There have been seven reported types of child sexual abuse to date, coming from both men and women who were children at the time of the abuse," the letter said. "The Church's commitment is to stand beside victims of such abuse and to support them through their experience to wholeness again."
