The head of the Catholic Church in Fiji, Archbishop Petero Mataca, is unaware of sex-offending priests from New Zealand and Australia being dumped in the Pacific.

Archishop Mataca questioned the claim on Pacific Radio News, saying in his 30 years as leader of the Catholic Church in Fiji, the nation has never been used as a place to hide priests who had broken the law.

A former Australian Catholic nun, Michelle Mulvihill, earlier this month wrote to New Zealand's Catholic Church about her claims, saying some priests who had sexually abused children are being dumped in the islands, especially in Papua New Guinea.

But the Apostolic Nuncio of Papua New Guinea, Francisco Padilla, says as far as he knows, all their priests have clean records.

Lyndsay Freer, the communications manager for the Catholic Church in New Zealand, last week told Pacific Radio News the Mulvihill claims were outrageous but they would investigate.
