Ohio — West Chester Twp. resident Christy Miller confirmed today that she has taken out a petition to run for township trustee in this fall's election.

Miller, a Mt. Notre Dame High School graduate who received a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Wilmington College, said the township's development and how it affects residents will be a focus of her campaign.

"I've watched the development of West Chester," said Miller, who has lived in the township since 1978. "I'm committed to the community and dedicated to the progress of West Chester, but I want to make sure progress happens in a way that's responsible for our citizens."

She said the effects of rising property taxes on older residents and overuse of tax abatements are issues she hopes to address.

"In my opinion, we've lost sight of how government works," she said. "I'd like to bring it back to being for the people, by the people."

"Christy is one of the finest people I've had a chance to work with in the legislature," said Colerain Twp. Sen. Patricia Clancy. She worked with Miller on Ohio Senate Bill 17, a 2006 bill that extended the statute of limitations on civil charges stemming from child sex abuse and increased penalties for clerics who do not report abuse by someone employed by the church.

Miller, a co-leader since 2003 of the Cincinnati chapter of Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, said the legislation drive fostered her interest in politics.

"It pushed me into an interest in children's and victims' rights," she said, "and that pushed me into an interest in politics. I think they were stepping stones."
