Charleston — A former minister faces a charge of sexual assault against a minor.

George Weld, 61 years old, is out on bond tonight.

According to the police report, the victim says he was assaulted twice once in 1989 and again in 1992.At the time, the victim was between 10 and 12 years old.

In May 2006, after years in the dark, the victim in this case finally came forward during an interview with the Charleston County Sheriff's Department.

The victim says George Weld fondled him and took his picture while he showered.

Charleston County Lieutenant, Paul Tittle, held a press conference to discuss the case.

"We followed up on information from the victim involving matters with Mr.Weld and developed probably cause," Tittle said.

Police say cases like this are not uncommon. Children assaulted at a young age are often scared to come forward; only down the road do they talk about the abuse openly.

"Later on in life these victims develop problems that need therapy or help that is when these things are uncovered," Tittle said.

Weld worked as a photographer, and owned a studio at one point that is now closed. Some of his work can be seen on-line. Weld also worked at two area churches including St.Phillips church in downtown Charleston.

In the police report, the victim says Weld lost his job because of accusations of inappropriate sexual activity.

No charges were filed in those cases and police say the investigation is ongoing.

The police report also lists a second victim in this case and authorities say more charges could follow.
