Vic West priest Rev. Antonio Osorio has admitted contravening the sexual misconduct policy of the Anglican Diocese of British Columbia and resigned from his position.

Osorio had been suspended from his duties as rector of the parish of St. Saviour's Victoria West on Sept. 5, pending investigation into an allegation of misconduct.

The diocese issued a statement today saying there will be no further comment regarding the investigation until it is completed. Osorio was unavailable for comment.

The Reverend David Opheim has been appointed interim priest-in-charge for the parish of St. Saviour's.

Osorio had received a cautionary warning from the diocese on another matter in July. Osorio blessed four same-sex couples at his church but it was determined the ceremony did not break any Anglican rules because it was a "general blessing of members of the community" and not a specific ceremony sanctifying same-sex partnerships. Osorio told a Victoria newspaper, however, that "now is the time to start blessing same-sex couples. I have done it and I intend to keep doing it."

Osorio also had a high profile in the community for a number of programs he was involved with. Two years ago, the former Colombian refugee brought food to young people camping at St. Ann's Academy in support of right-to-sleep activist David Johnston. He started the Rainbow Kitchen soup kitchen to providing lunch to single mothers and their children three times a week. Spanish lessons have also been held at the church and the church has operated a night shelter for the homeless. Osorio was also in the process of establishing a home -- Welcome House -- for immigrant women fleeing abusive Canadian husbands.

The Anglican Diocese of British Columbia led by Bishop James Cowan, along with the clergy and people of the Diocese will be consulting with and supporting the parish of St. Saviour's to determine how best to proceed with the social outreach programs operated by the parish.
