Maseru — The Catholic bishops of the Southern African Kingdom of Lesotho have expressed solidarity with former Zimbabwean Archbishop, Pius Ncube, who resigned last Tuesday.

The Basotho bishops said they learned of Archbishop Ncube's stepping down "with shock and great sadness".

In a statement signed by Bishop Evaristus Bitsoane, President of Lesotho Catholic Bishops' Conference, the church leaders also conveyed their support for the Zimbabwean Catholic Church, which had "gone through disquiet, trials and great distress.

"The Lesotho Catholic Bishops' Conference would like all of us who are distressed to take a pilgrimage to Bethany, the house of love, where our Lord Jesus Christ used to visit during his earthly life, there to find friendship, joy, peace and healing. (cf. Lk. 10: 38-48)"

The Catholic Church in Lesotho pledged moral support and prayers to Archbishop Ncube and the church in Zimbabwe, in accordance with the Scriptures: 'Help carry one another's burdens' (Gal. 6:2).

The bishops praised the former archbishop, saying "even in the darkest hour, Archbishop Pius Ncube demonstrated greatness of character and integrity, giving example of leadership, of humility, self-emptying in the manner of our Lord Jesus Christ (cf. Phil.2:1-11)."
