  State Supreme Court to hear cases at BHSU

SPEARFISH - The South Dakota Supreme Court will conduct its October 2007 term at Black Hills State University today through Wednesday, Oct. 1 to 3.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in three cases each morning beginning at 9 a.m. on the third floor of the student unionat 1200 University St., Spearfish.

One of the cases heard will be that of Tory Tiegen, who is appealing his conviction on several grounds.

Tiegen was found guilty of the July 2004 kidnapping of Troy Klug of Rapid City whose body has never been found. Tiegen was sentenced to 100 years in prison.

The public is welcome to attend any of the hearings. Booklets containing a schedule of the cases to be heard and a short synopsis of each case will be available at the student union.

Another case to be heard is Lloyd One Star v. Saint Francis Mission, a case that involves allegations of sexual and physical abuse in the 1960s against One Star and others by employees of Saint Francis Mission School.

The Supreme Court will also hear Zephier v. the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls. That case involves 72 plaintiffs claiming they suffered sexual and physical abuse between 1947 and 1973 while they were students at St. Paul's School in Marty on the Yankton Sioux Reservation.

The Supreme Court will also hear the case of Steve Tosh of Aberdeen who brought a lawsuit against police he alleged improperly pursued him in a kidnapping and rape case. The actual perpetrator was convicted in 2000.

Tosh is appealing the dismissal of his claims for damages against the officers.
