PORTLAND, Ore. — Six men who say they are victims of sex abuse have filed a $25 million lawsuit that alleges the Boy Scouts of America and the Mormon Church had an "institution-wide" child abuse problem.

The lawsuit was filed in Multnomah County circuit court Wednesday. It contends that the men were sexually abused in the 1980s by Timur Dykes, a former Boy Scouts leader and a teacher at a Mormon Church.

Portland attorney Kelly Clark said Dykes was investigated for child sexual offenses as early as 1981, but he remained in "positions of trust" for at least 4 more years.

Clark also said the Mormon church and the Boy Scouts "failed miserably to take responsible steps to clean up

their organizations."

Two of the men involved in the lawsuit had filed a past sex abuse suit in January. That case was dismissed and then re-filed Wednesday with four new alleged victims.

Stephen English, a Portland attorney for the Mormon church, said only one individual was accused of abuse in the complaint — the same man as a previous lawsuit.

"The LDS church has always adamantly condemned child abuse and we will thoroughly investigate these allegations," English said.

Dykes has been convicted in the past on sex abuse charges and is a registered sex offender.
