Monsignor Giuseppe Betori, secretary of the Conferenza Episcopale Italianiana, attended the 100th anniversary celebration yesterday of La Difensa del Popolo (The defense of the people) which is the weekly newspaper of the Padua diocese.

The event was also organized to defend the right of the Catholic church to deal with "secular issues" since the church speaks for the good of the country.

Answering a question about the Rev. Sante Sguotti, he denied his case is reflection of an ample debate on priestly celibacy. Monsignor Betori said it was a personal problem of a parish priest whose behavior is causing a lot of suffering to the church.

He added that Rev. Sguotti must ask himself if he really believes that he is part of the church. The monsignor implied with his statements that it was not the Vatican's fault if the priest was expelled from his parish.

The Padua diocese set today as the deadline when Rev. Sguotti must leave his parish in Monterosso. It is expected that a "sentence" will be issued Monday to expel the priest from the Church of Rome. This outcome can be read from Monsignor Betori's final statement. He said it seems to him that the way Rev. Sgotti deals with problems of priests in the church is very....Protestant. Perhaps his home is in some other place.

Rev. Sguotti became controversial recently when he declared his love for a woman who he wants to marry while remaining a priest. The Padua bishop removed his priestly faculties and has ordered him from his parish. So far he has refused to go and continues to celebrate Mass there.
