FACING heat, the Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor is now blaming their dismissal of the child abuse complaint against a priest on the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), saying the agency didn't back its case up with a psychological report.

Prosecutors handling the case against Fr. Benedicto Ejares hint that they knew of the discrepancy but didn't tell the NBI to correct it as, Assistant City Prosecutor Fernando Gubalane explained in an interview, "they cannot tell the complainant what to do."

But NBI 7 Director Medardo de Lemos, in a separate interview, said pinning the dismissal on the lack of a psychological report "seems oddly like an afterthought" on the part of the Office of the City Prosecutor.

"That apparently earth-shaking bit of fact does not appear anywhere in their resolution dismissing the complaint," de Lemos, who was in Iloilo City yesterday, said when reached by mobile phone. "Their resolution dismissed the child abuse charge only because the priest, being the alter ego of Jesus Christ, can do no wrong."

No psychological report was attached to the original complaint because, sources revealed, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) didn't make one.
