(AP) San Diego Priests in San Diego are being asked to contribute one month's salary to help pay for the recent $198 million sexual abuse settlement by the Catholic church.

San Diego Diocese Bishop Robert Brom issued a memo this week telling about 280 priests, "We cannot ask of others what we are unwilling to do ourselves."

A priest's monthly salary can be as much as $1,500.

The memo says worshippers in San Diego and Imperial counties will also receive letters asking them to make "a generous contribution" to help the church pay for the settlement. Packets will include letters from Brom and parish pastors, along with a return envelope.
