Padua, Oct. 11, 2007 (CWNews.com) - An Italian priest has rejected his bishop's demand that he leave his parish, to the delight of journalists who have made his case the object of coverage rivaling a soap-opera.

Archbishop Antonio Mattiazzo of Padua had announced earlier this week that he expected to receive the resignation of Father Sante Squotti as pastor of St. Bartholomew's parish in Monterosso. The pastor had become a celebrity by proclaiming his love for a local woman, and raising questions-- still unresolved-- about whether he was the father of the woman's child.

Father Squotti announced that he plans to stay in Monterosso despite the archbishop's orders. "My only fault is falling in love with a woman and loving a child," he said. Regardless of the archbishop's authority, he added, " I will be the moral pastor of the church in Monterosso."
