A Former minister of the Reformed Church of Australia has been jailed for at least 18 months for sexually abusing a young girl.

Nico Teekens, 67, of Hope Valley, was sentenced in the District Court.

Acting Judge Andrew Wilson found him guilty on two charges of indecent assault.

The court heard Teekens sexually abused the girl in 1992 and 1994 when she was aged between eight and 10.

Judge Wilson said the second incident happened about a year after Teekens had been confronted by the girl's parents over the first.

"Clearly, you did not take heed of what was, in effect, a warning to you not to re-offend," Judge Wilson said.

The court heard Teekens had begun a sexual offenders' treatment program but had not completed it.

It also was told Teekens had sought to be released from his position in his church, made a confession to his congregation of his "sin" against the girl and gave a public assurance of his "true repentance".

Judge Wilson sentenced Teekens to three years' jail with a non-parole period of 18 months.
