Lexington, N.C. — A Catholic priest in Lexington was just suspended after an allegation of sexual abuse nearly half a century ago.

Father Albert Gondek served as pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary for the past nine years. Friday, Michael Sowden alleged in a civil lawsuit filed in Wilmington, Delaware that Gondek molested him at a summer camp in 1960, at which point the accuser was 12.

Friday, the diocese of Charlotte immediately put Gondek on administrative leave.

Friday, the diocese of Charlotte immediately put Gondek on administrative leave.

"In the interest in the safety of children, no matter how remote the possibility may be, men, in this case, Father Gondek, are placed on administrative leave when an allegation like this is made," said David Hains.

In the nine years at the church in Lexington, no other allegations have been made against this priest. His order is conducting a full investigation.
