Providence, R.I. — A Catholic lay group formed after the priest sex abuse scandal will hold its convention in Providence this year.

Voice of the Faithful is gathering Friday and Saturday at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

Among the guest speakers is noted theologian Richard McBrien, whose keynote address will open the convention.

Voice of the Faithful formed in 2002 in Massachusetts amid outrage over the sex abuse scandal. The group established 120 chapters nationwide. It counts 35,000 members in the U.S. and worldwide.

Recently, though, it has been dealing with a significant budget deficit following a drop in the number of major donors. Board chairman William Casey previously said the group has had trouble adjusting to a long-term strategy as anger over the scandal has subsided.
